But the little man who lives on my left shoulder and always tells me who's not wearing underwear doesn't think that's the reason. That, at least, is how many observers explain the popularity this year of David McCullough's John Adams and Theodore Rex (Random House, $35), Edmund Morris' new second installment in his planned three-volume study of Theodore Roosevelt. We don't even know if he is an albino or partial albino. RFE/RL: What causes such nearly unique coloration? The amazing thing about Iceberg is that he is a mature male so he has survived at least 16 years and is apparently healthy, and not an outcast or anything but travelling with his pod of 13. We have seen two other white young orcas in Russia only in that period. I have worked off the west coast of Canada with killer whales beginning in 1973, and as co-director of the Far East Russia Orca Project since 1999. This the first all-white male killer whale we have found. Now we are heading out in 2 weeks to try to find him and his pod, and do our studies, and so we decided to announce it and release the photos now. We hoped to get more pictures, video and recordings in 2011 so we kept the photos quiet. RFE/RL: I noticed that in an August 2011 entry there are references to albino orcas, and even to "a large male encountered in 2010".Įrich Hoyt: We first saw Iceberg in August 2010 and we have only seen him once since then. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Saga fiona staplesHow did you and Brian first encounter one another, and how did that lead to the creation of Saga?īrian had seen some of my previous work, and just emailed me one day in 2011 when he was ready to pitch Saga! We’d never met before, but it immediately felt like an easy and exciting partnership. You can read our written conversation and see the artwork below. The ninth collected volume of the story was released earlier this month, and we got in touch with Staples to talk about the series’ origins. Oudolf’s gardens have been described as spontaneous, immersive and naturalistic, and rely heavily on grasses and structural perennials to maintain visual interest well into the winter. His popular public garden designs, and several books, have had a profound impact on the design of public spaces, as well as private gardens. This recently-released film has brought renewed attention to the gardens and landscapes created by this internationally-renowned designer. Īs part of Master Gardener Week at the end of October, I had the opportunity to view “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf” and participate in a discussion afterwards. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it’s falling to me to bring order out of chaos – or die trying. and there’s something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. Now I’m a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – we do paperwork so real coppers don’t have to – and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). Freire believed that the traditional education system, with the teacher as the “sage on the stage,” was designed to produce workers to support the capitalist system, and perpetuate the oppression of the working class. Critical Pedagogy is a critical theory created by Paulo Freire, Brazilian educator, and author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Hold still book nina lacour“A poignant, beautiful novel.” -The Washington Post “A Carol for our times, Yerba Buena is a sweetly sweeping love story about two women trying to find themselves in the middle of Los Angeles.” -Harper’s Bazaar “A lesbian love story for the ages.” -Vogue understands her characters so well that you can sit back, sink in, and trust the story.” -Los Angeles Times Beautiful character-driven fiction that lingers like a perfectly mixed cocktail.” -San Francisco Chronicle Yerba Buena is observed with a cool, generous eye in spare, quiet prose that expertly illuminates the trauma that Sara and Emilie are both wrestling with, as well as their hope and healing. Perceforest and the Moors, both subject to Aurora’s rule after the death of her father, give us a taste of a queen’s power… and all the responsibilities that come with it. Heart of the Moors is an original Disney novel, set between the events of Maleficent and Mistress, that is yet to be brought to life on screen (ehem, Disney, please bring it to life on screen). Ultimately – so the plot goes – true love does conquer all, but not in the way you think. It also introduces us to the enchanting Moors home to w allerbogs, tree sentinels, mushroom faeries, hedgehog faeries, pixies, hobs, foxkin and other magical creatures. The tale provides an intriguing origin story exploring her conflicted relationship with King Stefan, Aurora and the kingdom of Perceforest. Maleficent is loosely based on Disney’s 1959 Sleeping Beauty though portraying the story from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent. But first, for those of you unfamiliar with the series, allow me to briefly outline the plot(s): There is a lot to unpack in the moving, magical Maleficent feast. Well, I spent Saturday and Sunday soaking up all the Maleficent series has to offer (so far!), thanks to the Disney films, Holly Black’s Heart of the Moors, and the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil novelization by Elizabeth Rudnick.
